Heather’s First Big Bike – Kawasaki KLR 650!
We picked up Heather’s first bike in July 2012.. and at the time of loading her first bike I already struck a deal to come back and pick up her first big bike KLR 650.
Some might say a Kawasaki KLR650 is not a big bike…..well not in the manner of engine size, but here in New Brunswick our licensing for motorcycles is broken down by engine cc’s. First category is up to 550cc and the second is category is over 550cc aka big bike license.
Heather was determined she was getting her big bike license and would conquer the mighty 650.
Now the KLR650 is not a sport bike, it’s not a cruiser, its a tall single cylinder liquid cooled dual sport bike, right in the middle of the dual sport category.
With the KLR it is designed to run on secondary highways, gravel roads, dirt paths etc, it is by no means a high speed highway burner….but does well when it’s loaded with all your gear and I think the KLR rather enjoys the back roads and gravel roads, it soaks them up and asked for more. Kinda like us 🙂 aways wanting more.
My first trip on her KLR, I noticed how it had a good low end power and was confident with you ramming through the gears. The front end does rock quite a bit between gears, but I was pinning it to dam near full throttle between gears….Learning what it likes and, oops that gear is busy or ohh dam it’s not agreeing with that….so after a short time on the KLR I settled into a nice rhythm with the bike.
Now in September of 2012, Heather took her safety course and passed and has her big bike license! AWESOME!!
The next day we set out for a trip along the river, both on our KLR’s. ……off we go, nice day temperature wise, but holy mother of god what a wind, we figured it might be due to being along the river, so we headed a bit further inland, the same,…Heather was white knuckling the grips…just to stay on the bike…but she loved it.
She is now hooked and loves her KLR!
