Motorcycle Wheel Repair
Motorcycle Wheel Repair!!!
This is a very important part of your motorcycle maintenance!
Motorcycle wheel repair means you need to inspect your wheel and repair what needs to be done. I bought a Kawasaki KLR 650 last year and it looked to be in great shape. When I got the KLR home I did my through inspection as I do with all my bikes. The bike was in real good condition until I looked closer at the wheels. Thought at first it was dirt, but upon further inspection and a cleaning rag I had come across not one but 3 cracks in my rim, first off I was very disappointed due to wanting to take the bike out for a ride, however after discovering this I was not about to do that until it was fixed!!!
So off I went to search for a new rim, wow was I surprised at how much they wanted for a new rim!!!![phpbay keywords=”motorcycle wheel rim” num=”1″ siteid=”1″ sortorder=”BestMatch” templatename=”default” paging=”true”] [phpzon keywords=”motorcycle wheel rim” num=”1″ country=”US” trackingid=”stinsoadvent-20″ templatename=”default” paging=”true”]
This motorcycle wheel repair was a bit more than I was expecting so I searched around and finally came across the rim I needed, well due to shipping etc. etc. It took almost a month all said and done due to confusion at the parcel dept. Either way I would of had to wait for it due to none of the motorcycle shops around here having any in stock. The famous last words “We don’t have any in stock we will have to order it in” grrr. After finally receiving the rim I went to work and put it all back together and respoked the hub and rim, all was great no issues with that!!!
Now on to the other half of the Motorcycle Wheel Repair
Well I got the 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle wheel repaired so all was good, bike all fixed up and off I went. Liked it so much we went out and bought another Kawasaki KLR 650 this time it was a 2002 KLR 650. It already had some of the upgrades done to it that we were planning on doing so that was a bonus and the price was right, so we brought it home got a couple of motorcycle runs out of the KLR’s before winter hit with the – degrees. So every winter as much as I hate to put the Kawasaki KLR 650’s up I am glad I do because it gives me a chance to go over the bike with a fine tooth comb so to speak.
Now the motorcycle wheel repair for the hub. Well upon taking off my back wheel put on new tires I wanted to inspect the rest of the wheel and put in new bearings and I noticed it had some movement to the hub so I took it apart and hum pieces came off that shouldn’t have.
So turns out I need a new hub so off I go again on a search for a new hub, well I find a second hand one that was in excellent shape so I get it shipped. Not bad just about a week for it.
Time for another part of the Motorcycle Wheel Repair the SPOKES!!!
- How often do you check your spokes?
- Have you ever checked your spokes?
- How do you check your spokes?
- What if I find a problem..is it an easy fix?
I have another more in depth post on Motorcycle Spoke Maintenance.
Spokes are an integral component to any wheel, yet the majority of people never give them a second thought, except when they clean them and and polish them.[phpbay keywords=”36 /40 spokes wheel” num=”2″ siteid=”1″ sortorder=”BestMatch” templatename=”default” paging=”true”] [phpzon keywords=”36 /40 spokes wheel” num=”2″ country=”US” trackingid=”stinsoadvent-20″ templatename=”default” paging=”true”]
Motorcycle wheel repair very important!!
What if you find broken or even missing spokes in your wheel?
My advice.. do not ride the motorcycle …remove the wheel and have the spokes replaced and your wheel trued. It is far easier doling out some cash rather than getting a sever case of road rash when the wheel decides to let go.
It takes 5 minutes to check both wheels. The best time to check is when your washing your motorcycle, it only takes a minute to check the spokes see if you can wiggle them.
Well upon changing out my hub and removing the spokes from my old hub I only broke 3 of them so overall not bad so now I need to go order some spokes!!! Pictured below is me transferring the spokes from my old hub to the newer one and I replaced the bearings while I was at it. So hopefully it won’t take to long to get the spokes ordered up.[phpbay keywords=”Motorcycle Spokes” num=”1″ siteid=”1″ sortorder=”BestMatch” templatename=”default” paging=”true”] [phpzon keywords=”motorcycle spokes” num=”1″ country=”US” trackingid=”stinsoadvent-20″ templatename=”default” paging=”true”]
So do your self a favour.. check your spokes!
Do a inspection on your wheels, spokes, rims and tires… might just save you hide!!!
